We Won the Fight for Equal Pay in Pro Surfing!
In 2018, a nonprofit Sabrina Brennan co-founded won the fight for equal pay in professional surfing! She shared her story at the 2019 Women's March in San Jose.
Ocean Safety Saves Lives
In 2019, Sabrina Brennan helped organize the Half Moon Bay Safety Summit. The public and emergency responders participated in a 3-day training that included ocean rescue.
Trainers with the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group covered ocean risk management, safety protocols, equipment, technology and skills training to maximize safe practices in the surf lineup. Equality was a priority and women trainers and attendees contributed valuable experience.
It was a joy to organize and attend our first safety summit with Harbor District staff, Pillar Point Harbor Patrol and BWRAG. We were at overflow capacity with a waiting list. Hopefully we will do it again soon.
Women to make history surfing big-wave contest, but struggles for equality remain
“Women will have the opportunity to compete this year largely because of one woman’s crusade. Sabrina Brennan, the San Mateo County Harbor Commissioner, fought for a separate women’s heat at Mavericks.”

Steve Fitz addressing the Harbor Commission on Aug. 7, 2013 and May 21, 2014
At the May 21, 2014 Harbor District meeting commercial fishermen from Pillar Point Harbor waited three hours outside the South San Francisco City Council chambers while San Mateo County Harbor Commissioners met in closed session.
After waiting four hours Commercial Fishermen Steve Fitz was called for public comment. As Captain Fitz approached the podium to address the Commission the clock struck ten and Jim Tucker said, "meeting over." Before President Robert Bernardo adjured the meeting Commissioner Tucker got out of his chair, interrupted public comment, and announced an abrupt end to the meeting.
I responded by requesting that President Bernardo allow Captain Steve Fitz to address the board. The meeting was extended a few minutes and Captain Fitz read a letter from the HMB Seafood Marketing Association.
